Janet Mock & Her Influences: Her First Piece at "Allure" Magazine

Janet Mock's first article she wrote for Allure on May 16, 2017 was titled Beauty Beyond Binaries: Bonding Over Makeup Gave Me Confidence As a 13-Year-Old Trans Girl. In this article, Mock creates her column of writing under the lovely alliterated title of "Beauty Beyond Binaries", where she discusses and educates readers on doing away with our binary way of thinking when it comes to beauty, putting aside all preconceived notions while also taking in the more feminine aspects of beauty such as make-up and nail polish and so on without having it be so strictly female centric.

Mock opens the article, and with it, the column, like an origin story: she introduces the reader to her best friend, Wendi, who helped Mock to see herself as her own woman, to not be afraid to conform to what you have down there; to be completely true to yourself, whatever shape it takes.

All in all, the article is that friendship with Wendi, that intimacy, as Mock calls it. And how Wendi aids Mock becoming comfortable with makeup, and all the kind of creativity and flexibility, or fluidity rather, it can bring in creating an image one strives for, and the joy it brings when you finally have it.
