On Friday, September 7, 2018 Netflix publicly released the latest
—and shortest season to their roster of ongoing Marvel Netflix shows, this one being the second season of Iron Fist. Even though this is not a spoiler review, I strongly suggest you go watch the quick 10 episodes and return when finished. Now, let us begin our dive into my now second favorite series from Marvel Netflix.
Yes, you read that right, Iron Fist is now my second favorite series from Marvel Netflix, sorry Jessica Jones. For those of you who are unaware, Iron Fist season 1 is horrendous and I would not wish anyone to watch that, not even my greatest enemy.
Season 2 is surprisingly far better than the former! It’s a season that can be watched without watching the season before, where the acting, writing and characters have excelled expectations beyond what anyone had imagined of this show. This review will be formatted as such: the good to the bad. From the characters that were well executed to those who were not, and to see if Netflix is still as cheap to present work even with all their money.
First and foremost, the greatest character to come out of this series was Jessica Henwick’s Colleen Wing. Throughout most of this season, Colleen was at the forefront of the side of the protagonists with the help of Simone Missick’s Misty Knight, a police detective from Harlem, as Colleen tries to uncover her past while also helping Danny Rand, our main protagonist, in defending Chinatown. With Misty and Colleen together, the show takes a great dip into the amazing comic storyline of the Daughters of the Dragon, where Misty and Colleen are two badass women fighting crime, one with a bionic arm (Misty) and one with a katana (Colleen).

Next on the best character list is new screen but old comic villain: Mary Walker (or Typhoid Mary, as she’s known in the comics), portrayed by Alice Eve. With DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder), Mary is either “Mary”, a sweet artful woman or “Walker” a complete powerhouse and a literal badass who is of course frightening, but also somewhat scared. A very small but amazing detail is that Eve has heterochromia (she has two different colored eyes), and this detail comes to light more often when it's announced that Mary has DID. There are lights aimed at her eyes and close ups. It's a detail that seems fabricated with colored contacts, but it's real and it truly adds to the character! Both have moments of sympathy towards the end of the season, and both are a complete joy to watch!

Finally, there is Davos. An antagonist from last season has bled into the next one quiet gracefully. When the show becomes more centered around Danny, it directs most of its attention to Davos. He’s more ruthless and idealist and darker than before, once holding an agenda on his “necessary” kills to quickly dismembering anyone who does not agree with his logic. A classic mark of an age-old villain whose goals grey out once he has reached his full power that he snuffed from those closest to him.

Now onto the characters that were not executed as well as the others, starting off with Joy Meachum. Joy was overall a very weak character. She was pushed as someone who would be pivotal to the overall plot, and she was, but she was just thrown around to every place and I quickly lost any need to care about her.

Finally, Danny Rand: the white man that protects Chinatown. The great thing about this season is that Danny is pushed to the side for most of it so we, the audience, get more of a chance to follow the other, more interesting characters. But that does not excuse that fact that Finn Jones is still a horrible actor playing a still naïve and irritating character.

Yes, most of the characters are great and the fight choreography has improved tremendously, but Netflix is still cheapening the project with lazy set making, decent directing and won’t even bother to pay for more extras. But does that make the show horrible? Not really. If you ignore all of that, then you are left with amazing characters and a great story!
